Tamil Unicode Font for Android – Working

Again couple of months are gone since I wrote my last article. I think it’s time to write another article about the hot topic “Tamil fonts in Android OS”. I’m Android user since two years and I never thought to access Tamil websites or any Tamil content through my smartphone. Since Tamil Unicode is not implemented in Android I also wasn’t that much interested in digging OS for Tamil fonts.

One of my friends has IPhone and we had an argument which of the OS is best for current user. My argument was “it depends of the needs”. Android is open source and allows exploring more in your own way where IPhone OS (IOS) is exclusive to the users. Users are limited to certain functions.

Anyway we leave the topic which of the Operating system is best; ) my friend said IPhone can read Unicode fonts where Android does not include all Unicode letters. I didn’t want to let my Samsung Galaxy s2 go down in comparison with his IPhone and I challenged him to make my phone able to read Tamil Unicode fonts. So it started with my research about Tamil Unicode Fonts.

Tamil is a south Indian language, more than 2000 years old and derived from Sanskrit Language. It contains (12 * 18) + (12 + 16) = 246 letters

Tamil is a “classic“ south Indian language, more than 2000 years old  (I’m not very sure). It contains (12*18) + (12+18) + 1 = 247 letters.

(PS: sorry for the lack of Tamil history knowledge )

(Some of Indian Language has more than 1000 chars :S:S:S:S:SJ)

I have searched in Google about Tamil fonts in Android and found millions of people are waiting for the Tamil Unicode implementation in Android. I definitely want to do something to be able to read Tamil on my phone. Not only because of my friends argument against Android also because of so many people who are interested in having Tamil Unicode fonts in their Android devices.

After couple of research it was clear to me the Android phone has to be rooted to alter system wide files such as fonts and layouts. There are some methods in Opera Browser to activate bitmap fonts which is claimed to be able to read Unicode Tamil fonts.

I didn’t want to go for that option because the solution is just to read a website and Tamil fonts cannot be accessed system wide. So I came to a conclusion to write a font which includes Tamil Unicode.

Here are some advantages of system font:

  • This method would be perfect for any of the users who want to develop Application in Tamil without using graphic letters.
  • No need to install specific browsers Tamil Unicode is visible in any browser
  • Tamil Unicode is visible system wide (write message, email, applications, website)

Disadvantage:

  • Phone has to be rooted in order to alter system font
  • Everyone should have it in order to render.

Everything in my plan seemed fine and I initiated the project writing Unicode Tamil Font for Android. Half a way through I have checked the Android market for any Tamil related application and found some Tamil keyboards which claimed to make it easy to write in Tamil.

I was wondering how to implement 246 letters into Android Keyboard where we already struggling for space for 26 English letters; )))

Obviously we don’t need to have 246 letters because some of the letters could be created by combining two alphabets. But still the letters are too much to place in the Keyboard. Furthermore we all are accustomed to write in English Keyboards.

The Taminglish, art of writing Tamil using English letters has overtaken almost a full generation and nowadays it is common that young generation using Taminglish for their Tamil needs.

Another idea has joined, developing a Taminglish Keyboard for Android which makes writing Tamil much easier than other options.

In year 2007 (can’t remember) I have created a Script for MSN Messenger users who want to write Tamil Unicode in MSN Messenger. It was just a try and I didn’t have time to give further updates. Soon after launching the Script nearly 10 000 users have downloaded the script and I was happy to have such amount of fans.

Reference: www.msgplus.net and search for Tamil converter Script. or

http://www.msgplus.net/Downloads/Download-Details/DocumentID/8175/

I though why don’t you give a system font along with Taminglish Keyboard which will instantly make it easier to learn and write Tamil.

It’s been a week now since I have started the project. Today morning at 04:00 AM I finished the basic functions and tested the result. Now I’m able to read any Tamil Unicode website through any browser and I’m also able to send SMS/Text in Tamil.

Here are the solutions:

clip_image001

clip_image002

The Keyboard has not been correctly aligned, it is still under development. Keyboard functions are as usual with additional key [Cnv] which converts Taminglish into Tamil Unicode letters.

For example: “ammaa” will be converted into அம்மா.

I will be happy to have beta users to test the keyboard and font before I launch to the Android market.

I also would like to get support/comments/suggestions/Donations to establish my project. Smile

Thank you all for your support and encourage I feel so much encouraged now. And BTW I’m sorry for lack of Tamil history knowledge ; ) I have learned much new things through this project.

Currently I’m working on Bold fonts. As you can see the screenshot “Tamilwin” website does not shows any bold fonts on my mobile (maybe some of you already started to moaning “we don’t even have regular font, why you complain about bold” ; ))

Here the current progress:

Font

  1. Font alteration : Done,
  2. Full Unicode rendering : Done,
  3. Implementing full Tamil letters: Done
  4. Implementing Bold letters : Partly –done

Taminglish Keyboard

  1. Taminglish Keyboard –Layout : Done,
  2. Taminglish Keyboard –Conversion : Partly done (has some minor bugs)

APK

  1. Keyboard installer : Done
  2. Tamil Font installer : Partly done {Still having issues to mount the system in RW mode}

Overall I’m thinking to merge those two applications into one and hope will finish soon..

I’ll let you know guys.

The donated version will alter the standard font and and implement all Tamil Unicode chars.

Hii thank for the all comments, I’m sorry for the rendering issue,
as I said I was more concentrating not to break the phone it means the “NOT FULLY RENDERING” was already known to me while working with the font.

and I have the answer that my script is working as I wanted.

today or by tomorrow you all will receive update with fully compatible Tamil Unicode to the system.

I feel so much encouraged now. Thanks for your support.

What you are doing for Android Tamil users is gr8, wot we have been waiting for ages (btw Samsumg Galaxy S have pre-installed Tamil font).

I wish you success in your endeavour.

    //Tamil is a south Indian language, more than 2000 years old and derived from Sanskrit Language. It contains (12 * 18) + (12 + 16) = 246 letters //

As Mayooresan clarified or adding further to it, Tamil and other Dravidian languages are not considered as “derived” from Sanskrit. However many of them have absorbed different degrees of Sanskritic phonemes with Tamil having least borrowings when compared to other major Dravidian / South Indian languages

Another point is that the count 246 you mention for Tamil characters and syllables is one short. It is 247 which consists of 12 vowels + 18 consonants + 12 x 18 (=216) vowelised consonants + Tamil Aytham which is the character ஃ having code-point U+0B83. (The Aytham character is mis-appropriately called Tamil Visarga in Unicode charts)

Then there are letters borrowed from grantha script and commonly used and are also encoded in Unicode. Your display of the Tamilwin web site rendered with your font and text rendering layout, also includes some grantha, so I guess you must be aware of them.

Anyway, for the sake of record, there are 6 grantha consonantal characters { ஶ, ஸ, ஷ, ஜ, ஹ and க்ஷ } the last of which is not a separate character but a ligature that is conjunct of க் and ஷ. So these 6 plus their inflexions (6 x 12) add 78 more to the total. Then there is the ligature for grantha Shrii and also various Tamil symbols, digits and numbers.

Well those counts for descriptions apart, I am more interested in how you have made the solution. The problem has been that Andriod’s text layout engine HarfBuzz under development is yet to include support for Tamil and most other number of Indic languages. I like to know how your rendering support works?

Hi Good work, Like Sethu has pointed out, I am also curious to know how you implemented rendering of unicode characters.

If you can find a solution for unicode font rendering alone its enough – keyboard is already a solved problem – you can check the android tamil keyboard details here: http://code.google.com/p/android-tamilkey/

May be you could bundle both tamilkey and your font+rendering solution together. Waiting to try your solution and see the code if possible.

Hi mugunth, yes I’m nearly finished I’m testing on my sisters phone to reduce bugs.
The APK replaces the system font with a custom font. My concern is to remove all the bugs before I release as deleting/renaming the system font could lead the phone freeze and unbootable.
(happened to me several times during this project, and I lost couple of personal settings which is very painful )

Today or by tomorrow I will release the beta version here, and the donated version on market.

    Hi Krish,

I have tried your unicode font, it doesn’t render fonts properly. I think you have created two fonts and replaced it in the /systems/fonts folder. This still doesnt make android to render them correctly, all I get is fonts displayed broken.
I think those phones you have tested came pre-installed with complex script rendering support, so once you added the fonts, they were rendered properly.
Any ways still good effort by making an app. So this app works when you have a rooted phone that supports complex script rendering.

    Thanks,

I would appreciate much if you would inform here :

    1. The version numbers of Android OS in which your fonts and keyboard works .

( I for one would like to test in Android SDK – Emulator in my Linux desktop first rather than in my phone which has < 2.1. I could save my time if you indicate not to try in any legacy or newer versions)

    2. Are your modifications (if there is any) to rendering layout / stack is such that any fully Unicode conforming font (such as the open source Lohit-Tamil.ttf by RedHat/Fedora) could be used in place of your custom font.

The unicode injection works in samsung galaxy s2, and sony expria x10 works without no problem both devices works 100% pure unicode rendering.

Both ROMs are non custom one.

      samsung s2 running 2.3
      xperia x10 2.1

You can install the font on your device as I took more care NOT to break the device by overloading default char spaces. so you can test on your actual device. if you want to be sure try on emulator…

And of course, as I mentioned earlier, if you need a tester who is willing to brick his phone (:)) then consider me. 🙂

I wipe my phone and try new roms and nightlies almost every night. So it doesn’t matter to me of ‘mess up’. In fact on my first comment I posted that I had ‘MikFroyo’ but today it is ‘Cyanogenmod’.

More donation on its way. 🙂

    Thx

      Hi jegadeesan,

before you push the files can you take a backup of all your fonts from /system/fonts

      start adb

      # adb usb
      # adb remount
      # adb shell
      # su
      # mkdirs /sdcard/download/fontbackup/
      # cp -f /system/fonts/* /sdcard/download/fontbackup/
      # exit
      # exit

connect your phone to usb storage mode,
      navigate to /sdcard/download/fontbackup
zip it and send to Krishan@live.de

It will help me to examine more accurate…

    Hi mayavarathan,

thank you for your interest in Tamil unicode Font.
Please restart again and install the custom font again if you see the “done.. please restart “ and press once again the button
and restart.. if this not helps it could be

    Either you don’t have NANDroot.
    Please intstall BusyBox from market
    give a try.

if not make sure you have wifi access to ur phone, usb cable, adb usb driver.
1> turn your wifi on get the ip,
2> login to you router and settings search for port mapping or virtual server option
3> do a port map for your android phone ip
    eg:
    public port : 5555
    private port : 5555
    private ip/server: your phone ip
public ip/external ip: leave blank as default
4> connect your phone in USB debugging mode to your pc
    5> type adb tcpip 5555
wait for the message says “ adb startet over tcp ip 5555”
6> write me a mail with your current IP and the port number

I will manually check the problem

An error occurred and su was not updated. A zip file (SU-2.3.1-BIN-SIGNED.ZIP) has been placed on your sdcard, please reboot into recovery mode and flash it to update your su binary.

so i cannot see tamil on my mobile except via opera:(

Hi thank you for your interest in Tamil Unicode,

SU is located in /system/bin or /system/xbin

as the error message says try to reboot in recovery mode and install the zip. it will replace the su file.

Or you can undertake the rooting method again it might replace the su.

This doesn’t work on galaxy s. The rendering issue is still there. This is because complex script is not supported by Android.

The result is the same as to when I replace the DroidSansFallback.ttf.

    Congratulation Krish,
I’m excited to know how did you able to this in technical aspect, As I know Android still use FreeType rendering engine which not capable to render any Indic script correctly, (In Tamil, specially consonant with left side vowel signs such as கொ, கெ, கே). I’m happy to know then we can use it for other Indic scripts too (Devanagari, Sinhala, etc.. )

      Hi Subhalekha,

Thank you for your interest in Tamil Unicode Project and we appreciate by heart for funding us.
Regarding your question, can you please install BusyBox from market and check the root status?
Asking root permission means the applications requesting superuser permission to be able to inject system files. By default you are a restricted user and you need to root your device to gain SU permission. We are about to release several versions to bypass the rooting method. check our FB/twitter for most recent updates.

      kind regards

Infact many such casinos offer no deposit casino bonus to

Hmm is anyone else experiencing problems with the
images on this blog loading? I’m trying to determine if its a problem on my end or if it’s the blog.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Hey I know this is off topic but I was wondering if you knew of any widgets I could add to my blog that automatically tweet
my newest twitter updates. I’ve been looking for a plug-in like this for
quite some time and was hoping maybe you would have some
experience with something like this. Please let me know if you
run into anything. I truly enjoy reading your blog and I
look forward to your new updates.

I have tried Swarachakra, Google (Tamil) keyboard, Google Tamil (handwriting recognition) and a few others. All seem to work well, except all of them support only the ‘reformed’ (seerthitruththa) Tamil script and not the older one (pre-1980s), which I prefer.

    Any suggestions?
